Research Paper

Fashion design is the art of applying art, design, aesthetics, and natural beauty to clothing and accessories. It is influenced by cultural and social attitudes, and has changed and over time
and place. My mom made me love this ever since I was little because she had the same passion as a young kid and she showed me her notebook that she used to draw in.

I started loving fashion designing along the years and at 10 years old that’s when I started designing dresses on paper and getting help from my mom to make them for dolls. She would always help me fix my deigns and make the colors match. We would go to my father’s work every Saturday and take some leftover fabrics that would later be dresses on some dolls’ bodies. People wear clothes to protect themselves from weather conditions like for example heat,
extreme cold, and humidity. That’s why people created clothes in the first place but after time it had its own thing where people don’t just use it to protect themselves. It’s being used at the present time to show someone’s social status, occupation, economic status, ethnicity, martial status, sexual orientation and even religious affiliation. The industry of fashion designing is constantly seeing changes from every aspect. For example, the rate and manner of clothes changes between cultures and different periods of time. The field of fashion deign research is young but fashion education has been there for a little while. One of the first institutions developed was the London College of fashion. It was established in 1906, where it was taught
how to neatly cut fabrics and stitching together pieces of materials by just a needle and thread.

Ellie Saab is known as one of the best fashion designers in the world because of how he worked hard and brought fame onto himself. I see him as my idol, would one day like to meet him and become like him. The dress for the haute couture of Elie Saab is located in Beirut, it usually takes 7,000 pearls, 5,000 sequins, 900 resin flowers, and 500 silk-organza petals to make a dress. Wooden utensils are used to tack each sequin into the fabric on the dress. Resin is hand-poured into molds that are heated over flames, snipped with scissors, and then pinned, sewn onto organza petals, and then tacked onto garments. They create mannequins in every size to match the clients bodies so they can drape the dress on it.

Elie’s early life consisted of creating dresses ever since he was eight and he used his sisters as his models. His pieces would consist of patterns cut out of newspaper and whatever he finds in his mother’s closet for materials. He first started off working to design interiors for BMW cars, worked for MAC Cosmetics and also designed three large yachts. He moved to Paris in 1981 to study fashion but dropped out and ended up going back to Beirut. He first opened his fashion label in Beirut with only fifteen workers in the year 1982. Lebanon was known to be the hub of fashion in the middle east and was referred to as the Paris of the middle east.He began with only designing dresses for brides with high quality fabric and silk. He began building a name for himself after high-society females wore his items.

As of March 2017, his couture collections are available Paris, London, and Beirut. The first time he dressed a royal was in 2019 when he dressed Kate Middleton to the Royal Ascot. He was known to be the first non-Italian designer to join and become a member of the National Chamber Of Italian Fashion in 1997. Later on in that year he showed his first collection outside of Lebanon and it was located in Beirut. He reportedly sped a dress thickly embroiled with
emeralds and diamonds in 1999 for $2.4 million. He started being known in the United States when he became the first Lebanese designer to dress an Oscar winner in 2002 which was Halle
Berry. The first ever haute couture collection he showed was in Paris around July of 2003. Elie even worked on developing the education of fashion where he worked with the Lebanese American University and the London College of Fashion to create and launch a bachelor’s
degree in fashion where it has campuses in both Beirut and Byblos.

The world famous designer has about $200 million net worth which all is self-made from his designs being sold in 42 countries. He sees Beirut as his source of inspiration where he says that his designs are the result of culture and heritage. And he’s always inspired by it therefore a lot it reflected through the fabrics, rich materials, and the use of warm colors like sand and other natural tones. He always seems to find inspiration in Beirut’s sun he sees the beauty of its
scenery, the richness of the colors, and its people.

I am preparing myself for studying fashion design after University and my dream is to have a brand with my name some day where I design all the clothes for them to be sold all around the world. I am trying to build my portfolio from now and I’m building it from sketches that are made of many pieces of clothes. On my free time I try to sketches pieces as much as I can because that will help get used to the technique of drawing clothes and will get me used to it.
Trends are changing everyday and you can see that in any of the fashion shows along the years. Therefore, when sketching I try to see what’s colors and types of clothes are trending to create pieces that will match this certain year or season but I always try to change this piece to make it my own even if that means breaking the trends. Currently, I am trying to find an internship somewhere close to me because it will give me excellent opportunities and it will boost give a boost to my career. I try my best to work on my sewing skills and learn the basics, practicing will make me perfect in it.

Fashion designing is the art dedicated to create a piece of clothing or other lifestyle accessories. My goal is to be able to make clothes for everyone and to show my talent of art in these pieces. To be able to touch and see my products in my hands and all around the world.
“Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but decide what you are, what you express by the way you dress and the way you live.” (Gianni Versace). This is what I want and what I’ve always dreamed to do and one day it will be my career.
